Debbie Friedman
 Based
on the sales of her 13 albums and the popularity of her music
with American youth groups, summer camps and synagogues that
has steadily increased since the late 1960’s, Friedman has emerged
at the top of the contemporary Jewish music world. Her debut
at Carnegie Hall last January—which drew nearly 2,000 people
despite blizzard conditions—underscored the feeling that after
years of climbing, Friedman had made it to the summit.
Friedman performs a music that’s both American folk and spiritually
Jewish. Her early work bears strong resemblance to the popular musicians
of the late 60’s and early 70’s like Peter, Paul and Mary, Joan Baez
and Melissa Manchester. Her more recent compositions retain a folky
quality but have become increasingly reflective of Friedman’s efforts
to create an authentic Jewish music sound.
Critics have called her tunes "catchy" and observed how her "clear,
soprano voice" uplifts and heals her listeners. As singer Peter Yarrow
told the Baltimore Jewish Times, Friedman sings "the music of jubilation
and confirmation. It is a call to community and commonality that
rages against the darkness and spreads light." Friedman’s appeal
has much more to do with "an innate sensitivity to her audience" than
with her degree of "musical sophistication," says Rabbi Daniel Freelander,
director of the Commission on Synagogue Music of Reform Judaism and
himself a writer of Jewish music. "Debbie has a pulse on what individual
Jews are feeling. She sings what we feel.
